Time and Beyond

Painting by Ron Hicks

Become a toothbrush
Settle upon my incisors
Become a moth
Feed upon my sucrose

Treat time like you treat my pencil,
Sharpen it only when it’s blunt

And sleep without the fear of wild animals
As you are no dense forest.

Forget waking up
There lingers the danger of insomnia
And the limit of morning space
Where you become a clothed human with identity

Desert the thought of bathing
My tongue has washed your sweaty skin
For breakfast, you are pregnant with reminiscence

I have stretched your legs for you
Forsake the habit of exercising
Wear me upside-down
Let your world revolve
As my fingers ferociously tune your soul.

Know that we have dissolved,
Like wounds and ointments, smoke and cigarettes
Like distance and displacement, sense and solitude

Do not wake up to be at the mercy of the clock
Because you have become my time
I have become your memory.
